FISH TANK - Fri and Sat Report

Hey guys. The fluke fishing has finally improved the past few trips. Hopefully it will continue to only get better from here on out.

On Fri, Capt. Tommy and I hosted the Brian Timmes charter with a few of his employees, his father and younger sister. These guys were not hardcore fisherman, but what they lacked in experience, they sure made up for with their ability to drink beer. My kind of guys!

Anyways, our original plan was to start offshore making a few drops for sea bass and ling, but the NE wind changed that so we decided to hug the beach for a few hours and drift for fluke while we waited for the wind to die down. We had good action right off the bat, but the size was not what we were looking for only boxing 1 keeper in that time. By around 11:30, the seas laid down and we were were able to head offshore and met up with a friend that was in a really good fluke bite. On the first drift, we put 4 keepers in the box and we continued to work that area for the rest of the day. Final tally was 8 keeper fluke up to 5lbs and more shorts and missed fish than you could count. Everyone had a great time and went home with more than enough fillets for dinner.

We fished the Point Pleasant Elks tournament on Sat with an all star crew consisting of long time regulars Henry, Scott, John and Ed along with our new friends Vinny and Young. Starting out in the same area that we fished the previous day and found absolutely no life so Capt. Tommy made the call to check out another area on the outside of the fleet and it was worth it. Certainly not the action we had the day before, but a decent pick of fish on each drift. I can't tell you how many 17"-17 7/8" fish we caught. It was heartbreaking to release those good eats, but it is what it is.

By the end of the day, we managed to put 18 keepers on ice, but unfortunately not "the one" we were looking for. Our biggest fish was in the 4-5lb range and we knew it wouldn't be a contender so we didn't waste any time going back to Manasquan to weigh in and just headed back to the barn in Shark River. Congrats to all of the winners and we will be back at it again next year!

Vinnie, This is part of what fishing is all about, to fish with new anglers on different boats. Hope to fish with you again.
