Default Gear Demons, A Passiac River Story Part 2

Last fall I wrote about one of those days on the water where nothing went right. One item was my transducer coming off bottom of inside my kayak. So in the fall I decided to purchase a factory mounting kit that cost $50!!!! It was a flimsy piece of plastic for $50 and the grease that you plunge the transducer into. Not worth $50 as I soon find out.

So today I tried to scope out the Dundee area of the Passiac River. I launch and right away I have problems with my GPS/fish finder. I turn it on and off and eventually just off. At one point I go to shore to find out that the factory mounting kit also popped off the bottom of my kayak and this was the 3rd use! Add to that now I have grease all over the inside of my kayak. I don't like to bash companies for crap over priced garbage so I won't mention their name but it rhymes with hummingbird. So I paddle around and see nothing but carp, no pike, no smallies, just carp everywhere. I decide to pack up and re launch in Fair Lawn and paddle upstream. I pass the Fair Lawn ave bridge, pushing pretty hard to get past the little bit of current directly under the bridge. I start fishing the relative still area 50-75 yards from the bridge and WHAM! my heavy rod bends into a U and it's time for a Nantucket Sleigh ride. After a few pull I realize this thing isn't coming up and I better start one arm paddling my way out of the trees. The fight continues for 7-10 minutes and eventually my kayak and the fish got pulled by the current to the down stream side of the bridge where I finally was able to land (snagged by spinner above mouth), after another 5 minutes, the biggest carp I have ever seen in person (Released on his own power). Just goes to show no matter how bad the day of fishing is, just one fish can turn it all around. I was so tired I decided to pack up and head home. Thanks for letter me share.

PS and for those who think I was scoping for the Pike-a-Thon........... Yes I was Not sure if I can make those days work but if I can keep a look out for the sand color Tarpon kayak.

C'mon up for the Pike contest. 10 bucks per man. Biggest fish gets the cash! You don't have to fish the entire contest. We'll be out there Saturday and Sunday.

Interesting catch! Way to land the beast! Sorry about the gear issues, sucks to spend money on crap. Nice looking P river Tarpon!!!

good job on landing that sucker! Ive only done 1 yak I mainly do boats but I just epoxied the transducer right into the hull like I do on a glass boat. Works great and the guy has had no issues. The less stuff outside the hull the better, thru hull is the way to go
