Union County Trout
It's unfortunate that so many of the little streams are not being stocked this year but there is a silver lining for some other trout stocked waters. Union County is one such place. Seely's Pond and Green Brook are getting a sizeable amount of extra fish this year. So are Lower Echo Lake, Milton Lake and the Rahway River. Milton Lake is getting almost 3x the number of trout they got last year. Opening day at Echo Lake should be productive since they are increasing the stocking total substantially. The Rahway River above St. George Ave. will be seeing about 3,000 more trout too. For all of the youngsters who don't have access to the more famed streams and lakes, it should be like the good old days when places like the Rahway River in Cranford were stocked with almost as many fish as the Musky. I cut my teeth on trout fishing on the Rahway River. I'd ride my Schwinn with my hip boots, rod, bait, net, lunch etc. to a spot near one of the two dams in Cranford and set up shop for the day. Now there is another addition......Nomahegan Par

Re: Union County Trout
I hope more kids take advantage of the opportunity to fish in the local spots because there simply are not enough youngsters involved in fishing. If you're not a kid, think about taking one of the neighborhood kids if not your own. There certainly will be enough fish around so they can have some success.
Eddie.......My U.C. crappie spot is iced over too, but the best fishing I've had there is just as the ice starts to melt. The fish seem to hang out right under the edge of the ice and they eat anything that comes near them. |

Re: Union County Trout
.
That's good news about the extra trout. Maybe that will make up for some of the trout that are poached before opening day. Growing up in that area, I always return to Union County for opening day. .

Re: Union County Trout
Some of the ponds are already opening up in UC. I saw a guy fishing while I was running in Nomahegan yesterday. The little stream with the bridge near the parking lot is opening a bigger hole every day and that's where he was fishing. Access is tough since they still have all those fences up. Not sure how the fishing will be this year, I was told by the contractor that they took all the bass, sunfish and catfish and put them in Lower Echo and "disposed" of the carp. I almost cried when he told me that. That place is where I got hooked on carp fishing and I have some great memories. That being said, I was told by someone that they saw carp in there after they refilled it and I was catching sunnies for catfish bait by that stream after they refilled it. Not sure if they re-stocked or fish came in from the back or the Rahway or what, but there seems to be fish in there and there will indeed be a trout stocking.

Re: Union County Trout
Catfish, It looks like you will be trout fishing there this spring. I thought about you when they were doing the pond reconstruction. There were some big carp in there. I've got another spot for you to try with some biguns. Send me a private EM.
