Repower options?

I have 3 options and was looking for owner input.

1. 2008 Etech 175hp with 400 hours.

2. 2009 Yamaha 200hp HDPI with 190 hours.

3. 1993 Yamaha 200hp 2 stroke carbed with unknown hours (what I have now).


First 2 are about the same price and would need to be hung on my current ride. I'm figuring around a grand which I may be able to wash with my current engine.

Option #3 Runs great, but I'm sure I'll have to "opt up" sooner than later.

My first choice would be the Etech and 2nd would be the older 2 stroke Yammie.

The Yammie HDPI's like most early newer tech pressure injected 2 strokes had issues with blowing power heads early on and not sure if they fixed them. If you go to the used boat sites you will see that boats with these engines are typically selling for way less than their peers with Yammie 4 strokes for this very reason. I would pass on them.

Johnson/Evinrude also had many issues blowing power heads with their new 2 stroke Ficht engines late 90s early 2000s. It got so bad they sold out to Bombardier and they completely redesigned them and came out with Etech. I hear lots of good things about them. Great on fuel long periods between scheduled maintianence and very reliable. Great power to weight ratio too. This engine also has an ECM you can plug into and get all sorts of diagnotics and info on the history of the engine. If this one checks out it would probably be your best bet.

Older 2 stroke Yammies are fairly dependable but not so great on fuel and oil. There are also lots of inexpensive aftermarket and remanufactured parts available like power heads and lower units should it break.

Go with the Etech, I have twin Optimax. I would look at them also

Bob, Go with the E-Tec, Bombardier has got this engine completely figured out, most economical, quieter and overall cheaper maintenance and clean burning. Yamaha still has problems and they have their hooks in these companies thus so many of them around. More power per stroke.

Think I'm going to go with option #3....and #4.

Think it makes more sense to keep the old girl and put the money into a new engine (god help me). I do like the idea if the Yamaha engine, but the Etech does impress on weight to power. Think I could drop down to a 150 and not see too much of difference. The promotion they are running now is the best deal of the bunch too.

Thanks for the input and stay tuned. If you see me smiling and limping from a swift kick to the stones from the wife, you'll know I'm happy with the new power.
