river extremes

This year at Gillette I saw the river at the lowest I've seen it during the summer (shopping carriage and cinder blocks below the bridge exposed) and at the highest I've seen it currently (in some areas reaching to Springfield Ave).

I check the river flow daily at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nj/nwis/uv?01463500 and noticed the same thing. The flow went from near record low to near record high recently. I saw many trees float downriver in the muddy flood the past 2 days.

River is about 5ft. above what had been normal for the past 6 months. Checked out one of my launches this morning and it was almost in the parking lot.

I guess u just moved into the area. During the hurricane last August u were stuck in Gilette for 7 -10 days the water was so high. Nobody could cross any bridges from chatam to Basking Ridge. Passaic goes over its banks and over the Springfeild and Mountain ave bridges twice a year on average. Everything from Long Hill twsp drains into that stretch. What your seeing is something that happens all the time. Water on Springfield ave? HAHAHAHA! THAT'S NOTHIN!

those were just 2k12 extremes ed, been here 53 years and seen it all! Happy New Year everyone!

ps- there are a few years in the late seventies that I don't remember anything at all : -)

Heavy rain over a short time will do that. The Rockaway River headwaters got nearly 4" in less than 12 hrs. The RR feeds into the Passaic just south of rt 46. Plus you had some frozen ground which led to lots of runoff. This led to a quick rise in the river. It was also a widespread 2-3" rainfall over the entire watershed unlike a cold front or t storm which is localized. A big concern is for the next system coming which could dump another 2" in a short time. River will def be flooding by friday. Long term this is not good because u want the river low in winter to help handle spring runoff. At least the pike will be spread out after holding tight in the same spots most of the year.
