![]() After weeks and weeks of cold windy conditions and multiple boats calling it till spring time I’m finally booked on a trip... called sponsor boat miss Montauk and booked two days of cod fishing next week 2/2 and 2/3... anyone else looking to go??
This will be my first time to Montauk and only second time cod fishing so this will definitely be a great experience for me... I’m not totally familiar with gear needed but this is what I got One 6’6” heavy okuma rod paired with canyon hs16 single speed and 50 pound braid and 60 pound top shot. One 7’ medium action began rod with same reel 6/0 hooks Red tubes Diamond jigs 8-10oz Lead 10-14 oz banks Feel free to share gear recommendation and experiences from up there as I know nothing Thanks in advance |

![]() Good luck.
60 top shot is a bit heavy. You can easily get away with 40 and it'll make you joining knot a smaller profile. Leader line for bait rigs, 60 is fine though. 4/0-7/0 octopus hooks. Bring some big flashy cod/fluke teasers in various colors and purple and/or glow jellies to put 18-24" above your diamond jigs, too.

![]() Bring both rods and let the mates rig em. Keep one as a spare in the event of a snag or gear failure. Try em both and see what you like better for this type of fishing.
And all that fancy cod rigs and jigs which are recommended.

![]() That's the best advice. Flash some cash with a friendly mate and make a friend.
DO put a 20-30' top shot of 40# mono over your braid to help with tangles. DO bring a handful of rigs ready to go. DO bring some heavier lead - 16, 20, and 24 - coming off the full moon. DO rig one rod for bait and the other with a 8-12 oz jig and pink worm teaser. DO post a report when you get back. Last edited by PortlyRedhead; 01-24-2018 at 01:31 AM.. Reason: More lead. |
