If you're in the midst of a false albacore blitz, a free lined lip hooked spearing on light fluoro with a small circle hook should do the trick. Gotta match the hatch when they're finicky. Light drag. After the take just flip the bail with your rod tip down and they'll hook themselves right in the corner of the mouth.

small lures, ultra fast retrieve, NO swivels, very light line.. Spearing with no weight, no swivels, VERY light line, and bury the hook in the bait.. they have incredible eyesight and WILL refuse a bait at times if they see the hook .. Next time, bring your freshwater trout/bass spinning rod, and try some 1/4-1/2 oz white marabou jigs with a bit of mylar flash on them.. they will hit those things when they hit nothing else... bob

2X on a small Deadly Dick (1/2 ounce) reeled in super fast. These fish move fast... If you get frustrated by chasing birds dipping on bait only for them and the fish sounding and popping up somewhere else, you're going to be really frustrated with chasing Albies this way... This is especially frustrating with a lot of boat traffic around.

Trolling with small stuff like feathers works sometimes but you need to troll fast 6 to 7 knots.

These guys are pretty illusive and if you want to devote some time to target them specifically, anchoring and chumming with spearing is probably your best bet. Get out of the crowd, find a patch of your own fish with no boats around and chum with frozen spearing. Once in your slick cast out a spearing on an unweighted hook with a light weight spinning outfit and free line it into the slick. If you can net some fresh spearing at least for your hooked baits, that's a big plus. Fresh are firmer and will stay on your hook a lot better then frozen which tend to get mushy.

Good luck!!

Use an umbrella net and load up before you leave the dock. Just throw some chum in the water and you can get all the bait you want.
