![]() I am looking for a Yamaha Mechanic/Specialist that has the tools to evaluate the history of a 200 HPDI by hooking it up to a computer. The boat is in Brick NJ. Can anyone recommend someone? Also anyone have an idea of a price estimate ?

![]() Based on your post, I'd bet you are likley aware of the known issues with these particular engines, especially in the early 2000 models. They were prone to blowing power heads and the lower units had issues too. You want to be sure all the updates along the way have been taken care of.
I've also read that these engines are very particular about fuel quality. Any water, fuel separation or dirt can cause serious issues so you need to keep on top of filters at all times. If the boat has been sitting for an extended period of time you'll want to check the fuel in the tank. Good luck.

![]() Thanks for all the info guys. I must say i am having second thoughts on the HPDI. A 4 stroke may be worth the extra money.

![]() Just look on any of the boating classified sites and you will see that boats with HDPIs sell for way less then their peers with 4 strokes.
Some people have them and have had no issues but there are definitely people who have. Is the issue blown out of proportion, hard to say but they do have a bad reputation.

![]() I've run HPDI's for a few years now. If the boat has been sitting awhile drain the fuel +change the filters. As has been stated HPDI's are fuel sensitive. The most common filter problem I've found to be the HP filter. It's also the most expensive $90. The good news is they let you know by dropping RPM for a second intermittently for a very long time before they fail. I know people who never change this filter, but I use mine a lot and change them every other season. Yammi 4 stroke are good engines but believe they had some problems. I think it had to due with salt water entering the exhaust 2000-2007. I've heard that was a costly fix. I prefer Yamaha's but been looking around for quite a few years now and haven't found any outboards that doesn't have some kind of issue. If anybody knows of one please let me know and I'll run out and buy it today.
