Default Steelhead competion poll

Who do you guys think will catch more fish..Me with an 10.5' steelhead rod with spinning gear using brown trout egg sacs fished under a float. Or BigFishy whos going to be using a 9'wt fly rod swinging flies. I always like to rub it in to him how I am the MASTER baiter lol and how flies aren't as productive..as untrue as that is. Were not going until first week November because we go strictly for steelies but good luck to the guys going up before! Please post a lot of reports!!!

I have used both on spinning gear only, sacs were more productive for me in terms of numbers, but I caught my biggest Steelie on a fly.18 lbs. 8 oz.

Sacs +1

Depends on the flow...if the surfs up you are in trouble. I would also limit the amount of lead your buddy can use...if he can find a choke point and the fish are moving then he will floss them all day long...with this being said, all things equal I would have to go with sacks under a float.

Damn tough call on this one. Much depends on the time of the season as well as the specific conditions. Taking flossing out of the equation, I've seen times when flies absolutely killed it in a given locale while sacs or other baits did very little. By the same token move to a different location on the same day in the same river/creek/trib and it's sacs all day with flies going completely un-noticed.

Overall I'd say sacs by an avg. 15% margin for fall, flies by a 30% margin for the depth of the cold season, and an even split come March.

Definitely a good conversation question!
