Delaware River walleye - Need advice

I've had limited success fishing for walleye from the banks of the Delaware.

The only times I did well were on guided trips on a boat.

The guide I used has moved out of state, but he gave me some specific locations to fish for walleye from the banks.

I've been using deep diving rapalas (fishing slowly) as I used when fishing from the boat. I'm confident that the locations I am fishing have fish, but suspect my beginner walleye fishing skills combined with choice of bait, and/or time of day, year etc are contributing factors to my limited success.

Does anybody have recommendations on changes I need to make to have more waleye fishing success on the Delaware. (all of my fishing is from the bank) Thanks!

I do alot of eyeball fishing, none on the bigD tho. My advice is to try live bait, whatever is prominent the time of year u fish. The D has lots of shad/herring that would prob be my first choice, right next to throwing jigs. Ive seen 2 variations that work well. The first is to jig the river using a bobber in a slip setup w a swivel/bead stop. Lets you maintain somewhat vertical and u can jig thru the eyelet and get some distance to your cast. The second is w offshore planer boards mini version, I have tried this myself and works well. U use the planer to get across the river and let the current run your crankbait or lure down and it fishes extremely slow, youtube has videos on it. I troll alot of crankbaits for eyes, my favs are berkeley flickr shads, they kill em and are cheap too so if you snag or lose one it doesnt hurt as bad. rapalas shad raps and tail dancers are right behind and the classic spinner rig works great, you can use a bottom bouncer or lindy runner and cast them if hooked well. Do some digging on youtube u be surprised what you can learn.......

Not to familiar fishing the Delaware for walleye but if I did I would try to fish an area where I can reach the channel.... this time of year I would pay attention to longer flatter bars where they may move up on and spawn. After the spawn I would spend most of my time fishing the channel. Fish slow ( jig style lures) and keep casting..good luck!

Right now the Eyes on the D are just about ready to start spawning. There is a short window to catch them before they become tight lipped. Try jigging a medium shiner on a darter head or round jig head. Worm harnesses are great this time of year. They will also hit the deep diving raps, stick baits, husky jerks and 1 of my favorites the lipless crank, AWESOME on the BIG D. If they are starting to spawn look for slow water out of the way of any current or check some of the rivers that run into the D. Walleye like to run up the smaller tribs to spawn here in NJ. You can catch em all day, just look for the slow pools and I would recommend fishing for them during low light hours. TIGHT LINES!!! GOOD LUCK!!!
