depends on what are you looking to target....

Being in Garfield.. you wanna night fish.. and are cool with urban fishing..

Get yourself a decent surf fishing set up.. get some bunker and go down to hoboken off the piers of jersey city and hoboken and get some real fish...

Or hop in a car and go night fishing for large mouths in some lakes..

I grew up in the area.. and am thinking if it's worth it .. may have a better chance catching a police chase or drunken bum.. Their is some good daytime fishing in the rivers locally in the bergen / passaic cty area up and down 46.

Welcome. Where you fished is actually a pretty good spot. Nice Smallmouth Bass and Pike down there. Large shiners under a slip bobber will catch them, or bigger Rapalas. Make sure you have a steel or flourocarbon leader on because the Pike go absolutely ape sh*t when hooked and will cut you off.

For night time though, fish anywhere below the falls NOW. Striped Bass are running up the river to spawn. Big topwater Bomber lures or even save those eels you're catching and throw them on a circle hook and wait. Those Stripers will slulp them up like spaghetti. Use Google Maps and locate spots by any of the many bridges along the river and you should hook into something nice.

As for freshwater night fishing, within 40 mins or so from Garfield is Monksville Reservoir and Lake Hopatcong, both known for pretty good night fishing. Walleyes and Largemouth/Smallmouth at Monksville and Walleye, Hybrid Striped Bass and Catfish at Hopatcong.
