I have a couple of shakespeers, but I don't mount them on the pole I hold them in my hand while the pole is in the poleholder. It keeps it out of the way, it woun't get knocked off & you can use it for more than 1 rod, so you don't need a tackle box full of them.

Tried a few and chucked em. Found it much easier to mark the braid with a permanent marker every 20 feet and count off the marks.

Had a hard time reading the numbers at night (they do make lighted versions though) they also kept popping off the rod blanks and the line would skip off the counters roller.

When using mono deep dropping for swords, I measure from the reel to the first guide, then count off pulls until I'm at the depth I want knowing each pull is 2 feet.
