Default Sporty Sandy Hook Striper Fishing

Not many boats out yesterday with the forecas being what it was. We waited it out until later in the day when the wind was forecasted to change to out of the west figuring it would be comfortable if we stayed tight into the beach.

Bay was pretty sloppy on the way out but once around the hook it was fine. We steamed south looking around and didn’t really see anything encouraging so we put out a Spoon and a Mojo and worked our way down the beach.

Never did see any Bunker and birds were scattered but we did manage 4 Stripers on the troll and 2 Big angry Bluefish. Just before Sunset the birds started working on small bait so we switched over to Crocks and jigged 3 or 4 more schoolies.

The ride home was fine until we made the turn at Sandy Hook into the bay where we had 25 to 30 out of the west bucking an incoming tide... Pulled the trottles back and slugged through 4 and 5 foot whitecaps for the rest of the ride home. It was pure evil and the the worst conditions I’ve encountered in a long time. Couldn’t turn off the windshield wiper until we were inside our Marina...

Welcomes to the nautical terms:

In a Lee
..... windy but shore blocks wind near beach from water and waves do not have chance to build "Fetch" and in turn size until well clear of the "Lee"

And

Fetch- with a driving wind the waves build up momentum and size. The more room the bigger they can get. Sometime combining waves for a single much larger and the storied "Rogue wave."
