Default Barnegat Inlet Surf Report 10/20/2016 First Blackfish!

Had a chance to knock off another fish species off the list today and was lucky enough to catch a few despite having never done this type of fishing before!

Lost all my rigs but I think it was worth it. caught around 5 blackfish, the largest was 16" and 3 lbs. Also caught a random bunker that got hooked in the mouth while the bait was falling to the bottom.
Fished incoming tide into high tide. water was clean and clear blue. Plan was to fish slack high tide but I ran out of tackle before that even happened haha!

nice job brother. but just an fyi i think hooking that bunker in the lip was a weird coincidence since they are filter feeders, they eat plankton and other microscopic organisms.

Way to go Mud..My first experience Blackfishing was from shore as well. It was next to a Rock Jetty on Sandy Hook before the beach reclamation buried them in sand.

I had no idea what I was doing and what a Blackfish was but luckily ran into and old timer that did. He set me up with a rig and some clam and it was lights out fishing.

A lot of fun fishing for these rascals from shore, right?

Yea i figured. Must have snagged him just like people snag salmon in rivers during a run!

Sheepshead are another fish i gotta catch!

Fishing from a rock jetty for these guys is really frustrating with all the rigs you lose, but it's fun and rewarding when you finally bring a fish in haha! The fish must not only eat crabs then but clams and oysters as well? How would you hook those for bait? Shuck them open and only cut out the soft part, or smash some small ones up and hook them so that some of the shell is still on?
