Default Morehead City Charter

I did one day on a 12 hr charter in Morehead City NC on Monday. It was scheduled to be two days, but of course gale came to town for Tuesday. We had a good bite on gag grouper, red snapper, medium amberjack and assorted porgies. An excellent bite on vermillion snapper. We rounded out our catch with jumbo grunts, triggerfish and sea bass. I will give the OLR numbers as limits are just as strict there as most places. 8 10-17lb gag grouper, 8 15-25lb amberjack, 7 7-13lb red snapper, over 80 1-3lb vermillion snapper, a 4lb mahi, 7 sea bass, 6 triggerfish, 5 2-8lb almaco jacks and over 40 assorted porgies and jumbo grunts. As you can see very few lulls for only two guys and lots of color in the cooler. I enjoy different fish and fish that are able to wreck me a few times per trip.

I am very interested to hear more about your tip. I have a house 20 min from the party boats and have been fishing the area for 30 years. I guess I've been too busy with my own boats because I've never been on either of the party boats that operate in the area. So many questions....How deep did you fish? What tackle did you use? Rigs? Was the boat full of fisherman or vacationers? Feel free to PM me if you do to want to clutter up the thread.

I was on a charter boat. There are party boats that do pretty well on vermillion snapper, triggerfish, grunts, porgies and sea bass. They catch some grouper but those are spread out over 25-60 people rather than 2 guys. Fishing is from 90 feet on out. The run is fairly long there as we are fishing anywhere from 25 to 60 miles.

As for tackle. I used the boats grouper and AJ tacle which was a Talica with braid on a 400 gram jigging rod. For vermillions, triggers and the like, I used my 7 ft 30-60lb st. croix rod with a saltist 20 and 65lb braid. You cannot use very light tackle because sea beasts grab your rigs and your fish. Even with my heavy offshire sea bass gear, most grouper get away. It can however deal with AJs up to 20lbs or so.
