Default Removal of the Hughesville Dam, on the Musky

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife is informing anglers and other users of the Musconetcong River that the removal of the Hughesville Dam, spanning the river between Holland Twp. (Hunterdon Co.) and Pohatcong Twp. (Warren Co.), is slated to begin on June 16, 2016. The removal is another of a series of dam removals on the Musconetcong in an effort to restore the river to a free flowing waterway.

For more information on this project, visit http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/new...esvilledam.htm on the Division's website.

Wow. That'll alter the pool at the base of the dam quite dramatically. Everything swims in there!

.

That's good news. That dam was built for a paper factory that has long since moved away.

If anybody is interested in reading up on the dam removal, here's a report on it:

Good news for a free flowing river and improved ecology. Both trout and smallmouths will benefit.

They are dong this right. Not only taking the dam down they are rebuilding the stream bed too. Creating riffles and pools, and planting stream side vegetation.

After that dam is removed there will be only 1,999 more to take down in New Jersey.

Comparable to what was done downstream where the Finesville dam was... Think they put large boulders in the water etc.
