Default Great Day on the Susqy

Me and a couple of friends headed out to PA to fish the Susqy. The morning was much colder and windier than expected and the fish were in a funk. By noon we only had 19 smallies. The wind started to lay down and fish started to chew. By 4:30 we had 72 fish. The best part was that 40-50 fish were over 18 inches up to the largest at 20.5. We only caught 3 fish below 16 inches all day. What a day of playing with the big girls.

Hi Andy,

I have been in the salt mostly but this was my 6th trip to the Susqy this year. With no snow melt it became fishable much earlier than usual. They made a 90 mile section no kill a couple of years ago and it has helped. The big fish are allowed to grow and be enjoyed again. Give it a try.

Sounds like it's working real good.

When is New Jersey Fish & Game going to wake up and realize that a percentage of anglers don't treat the waters like a free supermarket and start establishing no-kill zones?

Did you fish from a boat? I've never fished the Susky, but guys from iBass360 catch big ones all the time. What a fishery. That's an astounding number of bass over 18 inches you caught. Could you even do that on Grand Lake, Maine? I've fished the Delaware for years and so far my biggest smallmouth is 17 inches, lots of smaller, but nothing remotely approximating what you did.

Bruce,

I have fished everywhere that you can think of including the great lakes and Canada and I think that the Susqy beats them all. There are lots of monster fish in Lake Erie but it is not nearly as much fun as catching them in a couple of feet of water, where you can see the strike. We fish from a jet boat now but I will be going to a kayak as soon as it warms up a little more. The river is about a mile wide where I fish and you can wade the whole thing. It is a very special place.
