Fall fishing at its finest
Finally all that bird life we have been seeing over the past month had bass underneath them!
My father and I left keyport at 730 hoping to cash in on some seabass and blackfish. NO GOOD. NorthEast wind hovering around 15mph and a sloppy bay made us go towards plan B. Broke out the trolling gear, rigged rods with plugs, soft plastics, poppers, and jigs, and searched for some bass. Ran away from the massive fleet and set up by ourselves on some good marks. Had lines down for about 5 minutes and we had our first fish, a solid 33 inch keeper. A little while later, another one! This fish just at 31 inches. After that is slowed up with a short here and there. Finally convinced my dad that trolling SUCKS and we drove around the bay looking for bird life. Found a black cloud of birds with the mother load of bass pushing bait all over the surface. I threw little white swim shads as my dad casted hammered diamond jigs. The bass did not care what you threw at them! it was an all out feeding frenzy of mixed sized (20 inch dinks, to my dads 25 pounder) until the boat traffic came.
Bass are here, you just need to be in the right places at the right time, looked like something you see on animal planet. Kept our 2 fish (32in,30in) and released another 15 or so to fight another day. Really good trip if you ask me, back to the barn before noon.
