![]() Hello everyone. I am a mom of three boys who are recently very interested in fishing. I am, however, not all that in tune with everything fishing. I do the basics.... Baiting the line(learned it from YouTube) and tying the hook
On. And we have been to several different lakes without any success. So far we have been using mostly live worms. The boys are becoming discouraged because we are not having any luck. So my question is where in nj deptford area is everyone fishing and what type of bait are u using. Please and thank you!!!! Any and all suggestions would appreciated. |

![]() Had to Google Deptford to find out where you are at!
Your close to the Delaware but that maybe a little more work than it's worth with 3 kids. There seems to be a fair number of parks, state or otherwise in the area, try there. Pemberton has a lake or 2, they maybe weeded in though. Try using corn or dough for Carp, they are everywhere. Buy your bait at a tackle store / bait shop and ask them where to go with 3 boys who just want to catch anything. Unfortunately this time of the year you need to either get up real early or try in the evening. Catching in the heat of the day from shore (I'm Ass-uming that's how your fishing) can be tough. Early Fall is the time to get out. Sorry I was not too helpful, but hang in, September is coming fast. Maybe PM Herringking, he lives in your area and knows the spots ![]() Last edited by Wilson; 08-05-2015 at 06:56 AM.. |

![]() i don't know the area either, but most ponds should have, if nothing else, sunfish, are your worms getting ripped off the hook or are you having no signs of life at all? you can try ripping the worms into little pieces and putting them on smaller hooks. sunfish are pretty ravenous and should be pretty numerous near weed openings.

![]() Worms should be working for sunfish in most NJ waters, even in the summer heat. Is your bait getting stripped? If so you probably aren't detecting the fish biting. Maybe try a small bobber with about 3 feet of line below it and when you see it moving you know something is playing with your bait. Give it time to take the bait in its mouth, then set the hook.
Sunnies have small mouths, so don't use too large a hook. Size 4, 6 or 8 should be fine. Sunnies will be anywhere from in a few inches of water, to down pretty deep, but about 5-15 feet deep will be the most productive zone for them. If you are fishing very shallow water perhaps you're scaring them away. An adult and a few kids can create a lot of motion on the shore and send them scurrying. So try deeper water where the fish won't see you as easily. A previous poster mentioned trying for carp. That is a good idea, but if you hook into a big one you may get more than you bargained for. Catfish can also provide some entertainment. Cast out a piece of hotdog or a large nightcrawler on a 1/0 hook, with a few splitshot or a slip sinker on the line and let the fun begin. ![]() Pickerel fishing in the Pine Barrens with minnows is good in the spring and fall. If the bite is slow, kids can play with the minnows and explore.

![]() Another option is to try a few artificials. An original Rapala in 3 1/2" to 4" should get you pickerel and an occasional bass. It's an easy lure to work and shouldn't get hung up because it only dives a couple of feet. Morning or late evenings should work well with it in the summer. Or try some in line spinners, Mepps, Fox Vibrax or Panther Martin. Any fish that eats other fish (which are most) will go after them.

![]() I've caught the following using just a 2" white curly tail (http://www.mistertwister.com/informa...ion~TTSF20%201) on a jighead (http://www.mistertwister.com/informa...n~RJH32-5%2010) and jig spinner (http://www.mistertwister.com/informa...ription~JS03): sunfish, crappie bass, largemouth bass, rock bass, pickerel, perch & a catfish. It's my go-to if I fish new areas, no matter what time of year.
