Smile Olcott NY Help

My buddy talked me into chasing some salmon, brown and stealhead the last week in August in Olcott NY. I have a 21 cc with a 140 hp and a 6hp trolling motor. I just installed 4 down riggers and have some trolling gear and gps fishfiner etc. Just looking for some tips on trolling rigs setups lures what to stay away from or any good info on where to stay or eat in Olcott area!!!

Thanks BC

I am not sure about eating but I assume all restaurants by the lake should be okay to try out.

As far as where to stay. They have about 3 hotels, but if there are a few of guys going best bet would be to get a house. Last time we stayed at one it was about $130 for night for 2 people + $25 for each person for night.

Worth the money in my mind.

Here is the site: http://theflyinnlodge.com/rates/

Worth every penny in my mind

When not on boat head over to Burt Dam for some gorilla style warfare casting.

Another option would be the Lighthouse Motel. I do not think they have a website.

heres a great site for that area http://www.spoonpullers.com/forums/

I know during the summer months spoons w spin doctors are the hot ticket and dodger/fly combos also work well. The best bet is to stop into a local bait shop and they will tell you whats working well at that time. The big problem is colors can play a huge role in the bite, the Lake O trollers have thousands in just spoons/flashers to cover all colors and bases, ur gonna spend some bucks if you arent careful lol

I asked almost same question last year mostly bout tackle from a Capt out of Mexico Bay. he stated for beginers keep your tactics simple. 3 to 4 rods best advice..Spin doctors good choice flies greens sliver, green white same on spin doctors..Recomended two riggers down and long copper rigs with dipsy divers off each side..If your experience an extra long copper down the middle play with snap weigths if needed and mag spoons good choice..I hear fleas are a major problem now may get worse...I would recomend hitting Niagra bar since your so close..I hear Olcott can be iffy late August and early Sept. Good luck let us know how you do....BTW one tactic to keep fleas off your line is boost your line test to 40 pound...Check with local tackle shops b4 u go..They can clue u in..

I grew up on the lake up there as kid. As others posted , check with the locals, they will give you good information. Wilson is another port not far away. Here's some web sites to check out.... See if you can rent a cottage up there. Not may using their own that time of year and many rent to fishermen coming in.http://www.olcottfishing.com/ http://conveniencecottages.com/

Make sure you hit the clam stand on Main St in Olcott if you are into them. Couple laid back bars up there usually with local talent bands. Good luck!

I ran a charter for 18 yrs based out of Sodus Bay , one item Imalways ran was a down temp . Salmon can be finicky feeders & finding active fish on bait at correct temps can equal success. Generally speaking ur fishing n/ s so not e/ w so generally deeper water on west wind . I uased to try fish over 100' plus this time of year. Many times in that end of lLake which deepens quickly compared to where I fished it may be only a few miles of shore .
Strong south wind for several days can move thermo up & stack fish close in to the beach .
Dipseys / today R run wire with due to cleaner water & fleas .i never ecountered any of these provlems since I left in late nineties.
Dodger fly combos caught well as did NK spoons which landed all my thirty plus fish except a few .
Alway be aware of temp & active fish in thermo depths , some guys run fast I always preferred around two knts , also stay out late till sundown , they come up at night and many a day was saved in the last hour!
I would stack my riggers & pin stacks ten to thirty feet of ball use longer leads on bottom shorter on top to be able to turn tightly w/o issue . Fluoro lds R a must now . 10/12 # should be fine for non charter.

Often times we had salmon & other species hit where they shouldn't have been !
Stay away from crowds fish bynumself if possible , watch u scope on riggers & make sure the baits R in temp zone!
If ur machine can read the balls then use it to attain & hold proper depth
Good luck !
Check ur PM's
