Default Dead whale

Anyone see the dead whale near the mud hole. We hooked up on a nice thresher and 5 blue dogs.

When I was stationed in Montauk the legendary Frank Mundus caught a huge Great White fishing next to a dead whale. IGFA would not award him the record because they said the whale was bait and mammals are not legal for bait. There was rumor at the time that Mundus had killed the whale to attract the sharks but that was just a rumor. He sat on that whale tossing tuna chunks at that shark for three days and he said there was another one there that made that one look like a puppy.

I've seen pictures of him on that whale. Met him once or twice and remember when the cricket II was at star island

Pretty sure he harpooned another that was much larger than the one they battled on rod and reel. He'd spend days on end waiting for the big one to pay a visit to his chum slick. He'd hang bleeding, thrashing blue sharks from his gin pole to add spice to his slicks. I was fortunate enough to spend several hours with him on 2 occasions when he finally returned to montauk after being in Hawaii for a very long time. He was very good friends with my godfather who runs the sportsmans dock on west lake drive between montauk marine and offshore sports. Those evenings were steeped in fish stories that'll never expire in my mind. He certainly understood patience, and the man knew how to catch big sharks! Seeing the sharks hanging up by the cricket II when he was over by the Viking dock are images forever etched into my brain.

Thumbs up Re: Dead whale

Dead whales definitely attract sharks! Looks like the side of it has already been eaten! My grandfather who kept his Chris Craft Sea Skiff up in Montauk in the 70's was friends with Frank. They where drinking buddies and didn't talk much about business although they would at times. I remember my Grandfather and Frank shooting the sh*t at the bar smoking cigarettes and having a great time. I was all of 7 or 8 but still remember it. We had no idea at the time we where hanging with a legend. Just a friend! Tight Lines!
