Saw a guy go through yesterday

Plenty of spots still with unsafe ice, saw that first hand yesterday. Was set up over deep water on one of the big lakes with some big, sketchy looking pressure cracks. Scoped them out with Scoward and decided against crossing it. The ice went from 5" to 2" to thin in less than 5 feet. Short while later, lots of yelling and a guy chest deep in 50fow along the same pressure crack. His buddies were able to get him out quickly, but still scary as sh*t. Have a rope, pfd and picks ready to go!

We spudded 3 or 4 spots along that crack over a 100 yard length. The bar was going straight through the crack every spot we checked. We wanted to get accross it, but we knew it was a dumb move so we all agreed to turn back. These dudes were idiots!

That happed in Saturday, it will be worse after the rain today. My 8" holes were 12" toilet bowls by the end of the day today and the ice was inconsistent,
5-8".

I was really hoping to ice fish tomorrow somewhere up north. Hoping there is still safe ice up there after this rain.

guys were ice fishing hopatcong this morning, seemed like the rain water on top froze up over night. no garuntee everywhere but should be ok in most places.

I always loved to ice fish but even on good ice it takes me an hour or so to not think of going through.
A few yrs ago two boys lost their life on bad ice Budd Lk the east end takes
quite some time of real cold weather.

I went through ALONE at the age of about 12 or 13. [60 now]. I was only up to my stomach or so, thank God my feet could still touch bottom in the muck..
As I tried to pull myself out the ice kept breaking... Finally got out, exhausted but that lesson has stayed with me until today... I will never ice fish again as long as I live.. If I was in 6 fow instead of 3, I would not be typing this...

wear your ice picks and use common sense and you will be OK. You can always get out using picks just be sure to go back the way you came in, makes sense to assume the ice u walked on was thick enough to support you before it broke
