Default RV fishing 10.17.14 First Trout ever

was fishing RV on Friday, trolling rapala J9 and spoons in around 40-50' water with leadcore and planer boards, about 2-3 colors (i am assuming 15-20' deep) hoping for some rainbow or brown trout.

caught my first trout ever (i just starting fishing for trout this year). was a really nice fight, nice 21" Laker. Catch and release. Was really surprised to catch a Laker only 20' deep. everyone was telling me that they usually hang out in over 80' deep water.

anyone else been trolling lately? only caught that one fish and lost one fish. perhaps I am fishing too close to the shore?

.

Congratulations on your first Lake Trout.
It's a great feeling when you get on that learning curve and start catching a new species.

Nice... Fat fish ya got there! I'm no laker expert but they're usually deep. That being said, I've seen them crush bait on the surface and have seen them caught in 20-30' of water. Ultimately, they'll go where they can to eat...

I am still trying to figure out the trolling depth on the lake. been fishing between 30 and 50 ft of water so far with 2-4 colors of leadcore. probably need to get closer to the bottom

Beautiful fish and great job on the release especially with it being your first trout. Trout are an amazing fish and when you see fish attain a trophy size it's tremendous seeing people releasing them. It will hopefully be in a few more photo shoots in it's lifetime and give many other anglers the thrill of their life.

I'm sure you're officially hooked now that you have the first one in the boat. It's an addiction for sure!

Two procedures u might learn to simplify & refine UR trolling techniques .
One define the depth UR actually trolling very important in warm weather months can vary now due to LK possibly I'm middle of turnover.
If UR working off UR depth finder than take some time to troll UR lures over different water depths !
If UR trolling LC rule of thumb 4' of depth per color 1mph to 1.4 mph!
To confirm simply pick a point that drops at intervals & confirm troop dept. when u bump bottom then u'll have idea how deep UR lure will be at that speed, with specific colors deployed !
Some lures will respond differently to depth , speed scenario but most will not be far off. Once establish each lure using this method u will always know UR depth at that speed.
Always let lures dictate speed !!!
