Default Fishing with Kids Advice

Everyone says "Take a Kid Fishing". Thinking of taking advantage of the good weather forecast and taking my 10 year old on her first bottom fishing trip on Saturday (she has fished for fluke a couple times). Couple questions as I don't fish party boats often (prefer the makeup charters for myself). Which boat would be most accommodating to kids? I know everyone has been waiting for 11/16 for tog and I dont want to get in these guys way. Are all the boats targeting tog and abandoning sea bass/porgies? Are the tog and bass currently in the same spots and both can be fished? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think any of our sponsor boats and the anglers that frequent them, take special interest in taking care of kids as they are the future of our sport and their business.

There are usually 2 types of bottom boats inshore and mid/offshore. If your 10 year old daughter is new to fishing on the ocean, I don't think I would take her on her first trip on a mid/offshore boat. It's usually a longer day and could be made even longer is she gets sick and you don't want her first trip to be a bad experience. For this reason I would stick to an inshore boat and maybe try to find a 3/4 day boat instead of a full day.

As far as inshore boats, I would bet most if not all will be switching over to Blackfish once 11/16 rolls around. Having said this, although they will be targeting Blackfish, some Seabass will be around as well and you could target them by using Clams instead of crabs.

Hope this helps and you and your daughter have a great time.

I agree that most "experienced" fishermen on a party boat will respect your 10 year old along with most mates and captains. I would stay as close to shore as possible and I would hope some of the other members will chime in as to which boat is best. Not a big bottom fishing guy but taking my kids out was the highlight of my season. Hence my login

Tight Lines and enjoy this time.

I don't often comment but I took my 12 yr old daughter (just turned 12 in Oct) out on a sponsor 6-pack - FISH STIX - and she had an amazing day. Captain Kris puts you on the fish and is great with kids is is mate Darran. They made her feel like the star that she is. They also have a heated enclosure and a microwave. The links below are pics from the trip.
