Boat Capsized in Shinnecock Inlet Sunday
http://westhampton-hamptonbays.patch...-boat-capsizes
Very sad.... Just shows you how nastly inlets can be when the wind is honking. Larger boats don't always mean safer. In certain instances their lack of power/acceleration restricts their ability to power out of situtations and they are at the mercy of the swells.... Not sure if this was the case in this instance but it could have been a contributing factor. A smaller boat with good ample power or even a jet ski might have had a better chance navigating the inlet because of their ability to react and accelerate quicker. It's situations like this where you don't want an underpowered boat. Best rule of thumb is to be within at least 75% of the horse power rating of your hull. You might not think you need it but you will appreciate having it if you get caught in a nasty inlet.

Re: Boat Capsized in Shinnecock Inlet Sunday
That inlet has always been nasty. We had to take our 44 MLB down to Shinnecock to have an engine replaced. There was so much shoaling that the Station Shinnecock boat had to come out and show us where the water was. Sad, very sad.

More on this... Interview with survivor. Seems like a swell came up behind them and capsized the boat.

Re: Boat Capsized in Shinnecock Inlet Sunday
That's weird- a following sea?
You run inlets in the trough of the swell and ride that ALL THE WAY in. Just enough power to stay on the lower back of the swell in front of you. Jeez! I thought he had a head sea with a wave with no back. You fall off those bow first and stuff the bow into the sea. There must be more. Quote:

Re: Boat Capsized in Shinnecock Inlet Sunday
Interesting that the survivor in the video said he was out on the deck, saw the wave coming and yelled "forward" to the captain. I assume that means they wave got them from the side or behind and he was telling the Captain to power forward.
I would imagine like most trawlers they move slow and the wave just overtook them from behind. Tough manuvering a slow boat like that through a nasty inlet with a following sea unless as you say you time it just right...
