I'm sure you'll get plenty of responses here. Love shark fishing, plenty of experience with sharking. Would be happy to get out for Mr. Mako

Know what you mean. It's certainly a time of year we look forward to. Usually leave around 3:00 out of SRI and take a shot for some early season blue fins on the troll for a few hours before setting up for the man in the blue suit. Last year my son and I had a trip in early July where we went 4 for 6 on blue fins and headed off to the sharking grounds and set up around 9:30. Half hour into the drift the short line goes off and the largest mako we've ever hooked is absolutely peeling line towards the starboard stern. Bring in the middle and long line just as the mako turns and does a bee line for the bow. Crossed over the mid range line and as we were getting it untangled, the mako jumps 5 feet from the bow of the boat no less than 20 feet in the air. The hole this fish left in the water is something I will never ever forget. Fish was every bit of 12 feet long and every bit of 500+. Fought her for two and a half hours, had her to the side of the boat 4 times but could not get the fly gaff in her. Fellow who was supposed to go with us had to cancel last minute and unfortunately we didn't have the harpoon on board. Eventually she ended up eating through 325 lb cable. Will never again use cable again directly to the hook. Thinking cable ball bearing and single strand but not cable all the way through. As brokenhearted as we were to lose that fish I will tell you she earned her freedom. Fish of a lifetime and hopefully we'll tangle with her again this spring. I remember she had a big gash in her dorsal from either another failed gaff attempt or from another shark but I will tell you this baby was HUGE. She only jumped the one time but the strength of this fish was absolutely amazing. Anyway, couldn't agree with you more, makos are one of those fish that have a special place in my heart. True trophies. For anyone who reads this post, I've seen way too many makos which look to be absolute pups brought back to the docks over the last few years. I'm talking fish which no way are legal and I'd be surprised if they weighed 50 lbs. I know the lure of a shark, especially a mako, can be overwhelming but please let the little guys swim free to grow up. This is one fishery which needs as much help as possible.

Can't wait for June to get here!

Dakota

Hey Dakota,
How far out were you? I'm a bit crazy, but if in range, I might consider a few butterflied blues ... Or a livey or two ...

I have never caught a Mako yet but would love to start going out for them. As for legal fish, I have been on so many party boats watching guys throw short after short in their cooler it sickens me. Not only does it give recreational fisherman a bad name, it decreases our limits in the future because of depleted fisheries.
