Raritan river trout north and south branch
For some reason rolled out of bed at 6 today so hit the trout in the north an south branch of the raritan. Hit he south branch hard 2 spots trout sipping flies did not want worms eggs butterworms or spinners. After an hour or so of frustration tried the north branch first time in years . 21 minutes and a limit later walked off the river. Saving some for tomorrow no big ones but with the numbers probably at least one monster. Wish I had a fly rod though would not have has to move

Re: Raritan river trout north and south branch
Same thing again today except i skipped the south branch. first time i had success on butter worms. 50/50 butterworms and spinners. acutally saw a couple of breeders today, looks like a brown and a brook , but not too interested. Probably head tomorrow night or ealy morning see if time of day gets them on the feed. For the first time today saw tons of micro minnows. Time to plug i think .

Re: Raritan river trout north and south branch
The North Branch is always my sleeper pick for trout fishing. It never gets as much press as the Muskie, Pequest, or South Branch, but some of my best trout fishing days have been on the NB. My only knock on it is that they normally don't put a lot of big ones in there.

Re: Raritan river trout north and south branch
I agree seems like most fish I catch and have caught are stockers, did see first nice ones today. Been years since i fished the north branch, very partial to the south branch but been a weird fish this year. cant help but think its the cormorants making a dent and spooking fish i see more and more every year at my normal fishing holes. Plus for some reason really looks like a major hatch going on right now on the sb does not seem to be a lot of interest in the usual baits and lures

Re: Raritan river trout north and south branch
I have tried fishing the North Branch this year, but I am horrible at it. The only place I know of that I can easily access is the bridge on route 28 that crosses over the river by the end of milltown road. The water is so shallow there and I rarely see anyone fishing there. If it does hold fish, I would be extrmemely surprised

Re: Raritan river trout north and south branch
Some holes above 28 but its a hike. Better off trying 202 bridge above the small falls and around the bridge. Some places on the other side of the road but limited access. Most places involve a good hike except for 202 and 22 but you'll have company. Still a better fish than the SB right now at least for me.
