Thumbs up Split Rock Res. 5/22:

Whew, really took it on the chin today ! Met up with a buddy it met from Catfishonthelake, he's fished S.R. before. We took off with a bunch of shiners and sunnies and hit a spot in the front, slow, maybe a yellow perch. Headed to the back and fished 2 spots, again, just a few big yellow perch.
Came back to the front and got some big yellow perch and a little SMB. I thought with the overcast we were gonna do really well, sloooooow day, fished from 7am till noon.
After fishing I spent better than half an hour cleaning up the parking lot. I filled two five gallon buckets, mostly water bottles and stuff, I must admit by the time I left the parking lot looked pretty darn good.
It's early for me to be fishing S.R, I'm usually not up there till mid to late June. I guess I zigged when I should have zagged (shoulda been at Merrill Creek Res.) The weather held off and it never rained.
Weather permitting I guess I'll try to get back to MCR during the week. I feel like Catfishonthelake, trying to fish everyday !

I've fished Merrill by boat years ago but we longer own a freshwater type boat. All of the sweetwater I've been doing has been shore fishing and in the rivers. Is it worth a trip to Merrill to fish from shore? I know it's an expansive lake with quite a bit of accessible shoreline but I was wondering if I should utilize my time elsewhere... Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Personally I don't like fishing any of these big lakes from shore. People do and some catch some nice fish, but a freshwater set up is easy. A simple 14ft. boat, small trailer, and an electric trolling motor is all you need. In time maybe get a gas motor and explore some more lakes. Fishing from shore is not permitted at Split Rock Res.

Hey Andy it is what it is and at least you were OUT there. Ya know they will be biting like mad there tomorrow

MCR ,may have even been the Dead Sea today so at least there was live action.

You pick a game plan and go with it...no regrets and you give it hell while there.

These, SR and MCR, are on my to-do-list
