Pine Barrens Pickerel
I got a fantastic tour of the Pine Barrens for some pickerel fishing today. Lots of off-roading, bushwacking and puddles, but it was a blast. Got there early and the first couple spots were LOCKED-UP, but we hit a couple areas with moving water while the sun did it's work on the ice. Fishing was on the slow side, but we got more than a half-dozen pickerel and a bunch of misses between the three of us. All fish were "aight" but one was a FATTIE. Waders were key and the fish fell to small jerkbaits, WAVE Tiki-Sticks and shiners. I don't want to post the pic of the FATTIE here out of courtesy to the person who took it, but it will be up on my blog either tonight or tomorrow. Happy New Year's everyone.

I love it down there. It's got a peaceful creepiness that is unrivaled by anywhere I've ever been in my entire life.

Re: Pine Barrens Pickerel
All my old Ford pick ups had the "Piney Finish" from driving down the sugar sand roads to where the pickerel where found.
I got 2 over 4 lbs. in Ocean County waters and me and a friend once caught 87 in one day. But that was years ago now. Most of the places we used to fish for them are closed to fishing now. Fond fishing memories and hopes for a great new year for all. |
