Quick New York trout trip 8/7:

Not trout weather by any stretch of the imagination here in Joisey, so Lard, Wilson and I took off for what should have been greener pastures. The two of them said they would keep me company while I wanted to scout a new spot, I'm glad they did.
We drove 2 hours to a spot on the Neversink River near Rock Hill. First stop to was to check the conditions, not good. It had rained heavely the night before and the pristine trout stream was running very high and muddy.
No big deal, we started fishing. Lard was quick to get into a nice brown.
Water temp was not a factor, plenty cold enough.
We moved to spot number two which was a 15 minute hike to the river in the Unique Area, place looked very fishy. We worked hard at it but the high and muddy water got the best of us. Hiked back out in what would best be described as the Congo in Africa, heat and humidity !!
Stopped on the way home and hit the upper Slamapo in Suffern for a bit, Lard got a dink smallmouth.

I'm just trying to get some ideas for the fall, but most NY trout streams close October 15th to protect spawning trout, I have to check the regs on this river. I know it was artificials only, I think no kill (we weren't keeping any anyway, just C&R) I would like to explore this river beyond the resevoir, up into the Catskills, I heard it's very
nice.

Nice looking river. Would have looked even nicer if the water had been clearer. Oh well, not much else going on in the sweetwater this time of year. Glad we checked out some new territory.

All rivers are on fire right now, Why? The water is warm and low and the fish are having a parade in the deeper pools. Hit the Big D, I caught 7 different species the other day excluding trout.....Try the deep water at frys run or the boulder field, theres big browns in there. Fish the shady side of bridges and boulders when the sun is high and hot. I catch alot of my fish in the middle of the day and other anglers have no clue, gotta go go out at sunrise sunset BLAH BLAH BLAH, wheres the technique, finesse??? Theres plenty of action in the small state of NJ.

FE, I think NY has a better population of wild trout.

Moz, it looks like a bit of trash, one of the very few pieces I saw.

I fished up in that region for many seasons since I owned a fishing resort on the WB . This water remians cold all summer & depending on flows summer fishery can be soild. High water conditions can be exceptionally good, timing is the key ,initial stages of rain that pumps up water is the time to be on streams, Once it's running like described you missed it, oddly enough the coollling water seems to be so gradul that the trout do not respond like in the initial stages of a heavy rainstorm!!

Yeah, there were plastic bottles and a bunch of sheet plastic at the mouth of that little feeder trickle. There was a surprising amount of litter on the streambank. Paper, plastic bottles, even a tea kettle! The trails were immaculate; the stream banks, not so much. I guess the park staff doesn't think stream banks are their responsibility?

I've fished the Neversink quite a bit. I like fishing South of the ski area off 17.

NY definately has a better population of trout, i know i catch em salmon fishing. You know the pesky 5, 10, 20 lb rainbows, steelheads and browns up on the salmon river, oswego river, 9 mile creek. Those damn big trout can get annoying when your trying to catch 30-40 lb SALMON!!!
