Smallmouth on Golden Pond
I took my anual trip to my buddies house on Squam Lake NH on Thursday the 9th. On our way north we ran into brutal thunderstorms in NH that caused a lot of tree damage and knocked out power in our area. We saw a break in weather around 6 pm and went on the water. The amount of pine needles and debris in the water was amazing and made fishing a little harder. I was suprised that we still had a pretty good bite from post spawn fish and I caught them on topwater, senko's, tubes, and grubs. We had around 30 fish to 18" before the weather chased us off at 7:30. We had no power all night but Friday dawned to a nice clear day. Unfortunately the wind was blowing around 20 mph, which limited the places that we could fish. The bite was good when we could find a place that was fishable and we put in a long 12 hour day. It was not the crazy bite that occurs when they really put on the post spawn feed bag. We had around 70 fish and they were all lean and just starting to feed again. We caught them on just about everything that we threw. That night the cold front moved in and dropped the temperature from 85 to 45. You know what the means. To make matters worse it rained hard all day. We spent about 7 tough hours on the water and ended up with about 30 fish. Our best bite was early and as the day went on and the water cooled further the fishing went down hill. I know that I am spoiled when I say that this was not a great weekend of fishing, but I know what it can be like on this smallmouth gem. I am going to try to get back in 2 weeks to cash in on the bonanza that will be available when those smallmouth start eating everything in sight.
