NJ National Salwater Angler Registry Goes Into Effect 1/1/2010

This is the official announcment from NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife:


The NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife reminds saltwater anglers that the federal government's National Saltwater Angler Registry Program requires most New Jersey saltwater anglers to register prior to fishing in 2010.

You must register if you*

* Fish for or catch anadromous species (striped bass, shad, river herring) in state tidal waters
* Fish in Federal waters (more than 3 miles from shore)

You do not have to register if you*

* Are under 16 years of age
* Only fish on federally licensed party or charter boats
* Hold a Highly Migratory Species Angling Permit

Online and telephone registration will begin January 1, 2010. Register online at www.countmyfish.noaa.gov or call toll free 888-674-7411.

just wondering how they are going to know if you registered or not? and if you do not and are caught surf fishing will yoube fined? probably says it on there but i'm to lazy to read all of it right now anyone wanna answer for me lol

Who Will Need to Register?
Beginning January 1, 2010, recreational fishermen will need to sign up with the new National Saltwater Angler Registry if they:

DO NOT hold a saltwater fishing license from a state where they are automatically registered (the green states on the map).

I have a South Carolina SW license so I guess I don't have to register?

But then, if you go to the "Frequently asked questions page" They say:

9. Are there any exemptions from the registry requirement?
People who live in states that already have a program in place to gather the information necessary for the registry and have entered into an agreement with NOAA to share that information will be automatically included in the registry. Also, anglers who fish only on licensed party, charter, or guide boats will not be required to register with NOAA since these vessels are surveyed separately from angler surveys. Those who hold angler permits to fish for highly migratory species, such as tunas or swordfish, and those fishing under commercial fishing licenses or subsistence fishing permits will be exempt. Anglers registered or permitted to fish in a formal state or federal subsistence fishery will also be exempt, as will anglers under 16.

If you live in a State that has a recognized saltwater licence or registry and you get that license, you now hold a registration.

Joe, when you sign up they issue you a number. And a temporary paper permit.
