![]() 3 words describe this trip---one incredible trip!!-- Riding out on a near flat sea to the Hudson, we stopped at the NOAA buoy at the tip for mahi of which only one was hooked and boated. Water here was greenish blue at low 60's. After a short run, we set up a drift on a wall in 350' crystal clear blue 69* water. change was visible, like crossing the street. Started at 1:30, first fish on/in about 2 o'clock---and then it started: for the next 6 hours, yes six, non-stop action with sometimes 4-5 fish on at once and as is usually the case, they all want to be together, either at the bow or stern. A very few were lost during the gatherings which attests to the crew's abilities and anglers listening. All these fish ranged from 60 to 90 lb. class yellows. The bigger ones would be cranked in to a point then would just stop, then the battle would really start. 15-20 minutes to get 'em to gaff--about half were double gaffed. At 7:30 the Gambler was plugged---even with several being collared before being slushed!!! 86 YFT's in 6 hours of fishing! that was just incredible. Are we staying for sword fish?---NO---Near the end some chicken mahi appeared eating the chum as it was ladled out. One discovered my butterfish, took 3-4 minutes of it working on it before hooking itself and getting lifted in.
Although this was a scheduled 36hr trip, it ended up as a 20hr super trip. I didn't hear any bitching about the early whistle. Any more fish, they would just lie on the deck and go bad--stupid. There were several boats out there but we set up away from them--only 2 passed near unlike the previous trip. We actually made one drift, starting on a wall, drifting into the canyon deep and up onto the other wall. Again, KUDOS, KUDOS, KUDOS to the crew for their efforts and to Capt. Bob for his foresight in finding that magical "X". I think only butters caught with maybe a few on squid. One flushed out fish was full of chunks and 4 whole butters. 2-4 ounces on 50-80# leaders caught. I had no touches on 60, went to 50 and had instant success. There were several boat poles-they all caught. Totals: 86 YFT. 2 mahi. 1 squid(netted) We're going to do this again next week? Can only hope....

![]() It's good stuff. Soooo damn good.
As I was loining out the 12 fish we brought back to the dock I couldn't help but notice the insane amount of grease in these fish. My Grundens were repelling water like oil based wood finish afterwards when I was washing them. Must be the anchovies out there...

![]() Chucky!!!
So glad to see you are still out there slayin' them! First time logging on in a few years. Gad to see the fishing has been good this year. I really miss these trips. Having a 5 year old and now a restaurant keeps me busy. Maybe i'll try to get out next year. I need to bend those rods that Shorts built for me. Take Care and keep it up!!! Mark

![]() It was an exceptional trip. Rarely, in my nearly 35 years of doing this, have I seen such wild, consistent canyon fishing on, tackle busting, gaff destroying, big yellowfin. After such lean years in 2017, 18, 19 --it is a joy. The fishing at the canyon wall has been great in the autums of 2020, 21 and so far, this year.
I'm glad to see the customers bring their big coolers for the trip home, left in their trucks. Friends and family members are being provided for. Ice em up and take care of the fillets next day! I have been enjoying sharing the benifits by sharing a few loins myself. Also, had some good fresh tuna steaks and even vaccum sealed some meat for the winter. Getting ready for another run in an hour See you Weds, Chuck!
