I have been going to OBX for many years. I have fished from the bridges on the way to Manteo and under the big causeway bridge docks. Mostly sea trout and croakers and spot. In regards to the surf , my suggestion is to check at a local tackle shop for help. You will need an NC license.

If you are looking for some things to do/eat here are a few recommendations. Go to Keller's Fishing Supply aka. rope shop in Manteo. You will pass Pirates Cove Marina. At the marina, it is always fun to see the boats return to the docks with their catches. Also, there is their boat shop, Tiki Bar and Blue Water grill. Great food and atmosphere. Try Tortuga Lie and Sam and Omnie for local flavors. Collington Inn is a great place for a good dinner.

Have a great time.

Surf is ok, or not good, depending on what ya expectations are. Lotta small fish in the wash when the water is that warm in August but still stuff to be caught.

Croaker, pompano, reds, etc. Gulp bloods will catch anything that swims there. Simple surf rig with sliding sinker rig.

Give it a shot in the dark with some bait chunks and the sharks will be there. Nothing huge but a great variety of species.

From the reports I was reading when I lived there it was all about those damn sand fleas, ya know the ones you dig up from the sand. Dead sticking is huge down there, read very few reports of people actually tossing lures.

1.) Dead stick sand fleas.

2.) Toss Ava 007 and the like for Spanish Mackerel.

Toss 007/017 AVA jigs as well as 7/8-1.5 ounce Epoxy style jigs as there are plenty of spanish mackerel and some small bluefish in the surf.

Might consider hitting one of the ocean front fishing piers. I usually stay further south in OBX (Buxton) and try to get one day in on the Avon pier. Regulars have been known to catch tarpon, king mackerel etc. fishing live bait from the pier.
