9/5 tough day but still rewarding
As a birthday gift, my son decided to treat me to a day of fishing on my favorite non sponsor party boat. We decided on porgies, because they were reported to be plentiful. The boat was pretty crowded, we were happy that we arrived early to nab good spots at the rail. Roughly 60% of the customers wore masks, a good thing since they were not required by the boat, and the 6 foot rule was not being enforced.
We started off, heading north to fish off of AH. From there, it was a wreck near Sandy Hook. Followed by a trip over to Brooklyn. No problems with the effort made by the Captain trying to find porgies. What we did find were tiny sea bass at every stop. I literally caught 75 plus sea bass from 4-8 inches. Plus one porgy that’s was dropped bringing him in. Plus a short fluke. My son ended up with 3 porgies, and a million baby sea bass. High hook on the boat was probably 5 fish. A trigger won the pool.
According to the Captain, he read fish all over, they just weren’t biting. Or as a mate said, “this is our worst day of porgy fishing this year”. There’s a sponsor boat on here that pretty much recycles the same daily report, with patrons leaving with coolers full of “jumbo” porgies. (Looking at the pictures, I wouldn’t call a 10 or 11 inch porgy a jumbo). If this is true, I wonder where he is fishing?
Oh well, tough day fishing, but the chance to spend time with my son was priceless! Good luck to all. I will be back at ‘em next week.
