![]() The Gambler has seen some good fluke fishing lately, with a good percentage of keepers. A number of limits were caught on Weds trip. Ben was high hook with 6 keepers (retaining his limit) and about 10 undersize.
It's not super fast action but good that the fish are bigger. Different types of conditions call for different methods. --The jig/bucktail guys seem to do better on a slow moving drift but traditional fluke rigs (long leader behind a sinker) works better when the drift picks up speed. Our regular, Courtney, has been using the latter with a pink skirt baited with spearing/squid combo and has been winning pools consistently! The Gambler was out last night on our Nite Wreckin trip. The ling fiishing was not as fast as it was a couple weeks ago but we caught some nice ones. Small bluefish are starting to show up, too. I took a spin rod myself, last night and hooked 3 blues in my first six casts. I was using a 2 ounce A27 with a white tail. I handed off the rod to one of our customers and he caught some too, retrieving at a medium speed. Lots of fun and the best eating size. Bake or grill bluefish fillets with a little terriaki sauce and you've got a great tasting, healthy meal. Also under the lights, good sized squid are schooling up! If you want to catch squid, use a light spinning set-up with a squid jig, cast past the lights and reel and stop. We've had guys in the past that fished for nothing but squid who were able to catch 30 or more. Can't get any fresher than that. I will try to have some squid jigs aboard to sell but best if you can pick up a couple on your way to the boat. Just a reminder during these strange times: Our galley is closed so please bring food and drink; bring face covering; we have our boat limited to 30 passengers at this time and rail marked at 6 foot intervals, but if you come down with family or friends, you can, of course, fish closer to them. I must say that everyone on board has been really cool and understanding. Thank you, Gambler fishermen and gals. Hope to see you aboard. Capt Bob
