i have a 10ft old town canoe. i use a very bright headlamp at night. the law states that is good enough for fishing at night. the picture in the manual shows the person holding a lantern and another shows a light that is worn on the persons clothing as suitable. does anybody know if i am lawful only using a bright headlamp? any info would be helpful thanks.

This may also help:
http://www.state.nj.us/njsp/info/pdf...ety-manual.pdf Here's the part i copied from that PDF that should apply to you: " A vessel under oars may exhibit the lights prescribed in this section for sailing vessels, but if it does not, it shall have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light which shall be exhibited in suffi cient time to prevent collision. (See Figure 8). " So, according to the above your headlight or handheld light would comply.. |

I teach this from time to time. Ideally you want something that has 360 degrees of visibility.
A flash light or a British "electric torch(LOL) is turned on and laid down on the interior seat to light up the interior of your boat. The standard for the all around light in this size class is visibility of up to 1 mile in pitch black. Quote:

from a safety standpoint i would get something like below...if out on the cong i make a habit to flash a light at any oncoming boat so they know I am there....the "anchored" white light gets lost with all the house/dock lights...i had a near miss with a pontoon boat that was floating in the middle of the lake with only their anchor light on.

Don't buy that one. I had that one and the switch is a piece of crap. But IT does do the trick is working.
And you're right. Waiving around a strong flashlight will fair better with the idiots out there too Better yet- a blinking BLUE strobe. LOL That one they will slow down for. Quote:
