weird drone

I was fishing the Raritan at Sellers today when I heard a weird sound behind me. It sounded like an electric wheelchair so I figured someone had one on the paved path above me. The sound stayed in one place so I turned to look and there was a white drone with a red flashing light hovering about a hundred feet over the parking lot. I figured someone nearby was flying it so I waved at it and went back to fishing. The sound got louder so I turned to look again and it had dropped lower. Here's where things get weird. It hovered there for about a minute then shot off over the river and eventually disappeared in the distance. I'd say conservatively it covered a quarter mile in 5 seconds and disappeared over a mile away. That's 180 mph and it didn't accelerate it just went! What kind of drone does that and how can it be controlled from over a mile away without line-of-sight?

apparently they've gotten quite sophisticated, blew my mind!

If you couldn't see the operator, then the operator most likely wasn't in line of sight with the drone and was operating illegally, probably using point of view camera on the drone and long range 2.4ghz radios. Unfortunately all too common these days. I am generally for the government staying as far out of everyone's business as possible, but I really, really can't wait until the FCC/FAA crack down on these things and get them out of the sky. Only a matter of time with the amount of them that have been bothering airports lately.

That's one of the things I thought about. When I first got there a bald eagle flew up the river, one of nature's finest. When I left a drone flew over the river.

I've just started seeing drones while I'm fishing this summer.
Yeah, they're really annoying. It distracts me from what I'm doing. I'm trying to focus on my lure and I've got this buzzing thing thing flying around me.

6 lb. test casted in to their rotors should take care of the annoyance.

NY DEC is using them for surveillance and enforcement now. Seen them on the S.R. when I was up this year in Oct.

Still too many recreational users here in NJ now though. I agree with Mark, cast a line and watch 'em drop.

I would say F&G. We were bass fishing late March a few years ago in the middle of Raritan Bay and one appeared 100 ft off of our stern and just hovered. We were far from land and no other boats around. My buddy started yelling at if to go away and I started to tie two sinkers on a piece of line to fowl the props. But it flew away before i could see the thing take a saltwater bath😈Haha.
