Question Beach Haven West question

My brother and I'll be staying with my in laws the next few weekends in beach haven west, just over the bridge from LBI. All my experience fishing the salt has been soaking bait in the shark river area or fluking with the down deep crew. Looking to get out and do some surfcasting out front or in the back while I am down near LBI.

We also have kayaks, so that's an option, but no boat. I love catching anything from snappers to kingfish to fluke to sharks, even skates, ok, maybe not skates

Not looking for spots, but any advice on what our best options are currently as far as what species to target and whether Oceanside or bayside would be appreciated.

Thanks all, I have been lurking for awhile now, hopefully with more opportunities to fish I'll be posting some!

You could catch kingfish near the jettys with small hooks and worms. You could also fish egg harbor for fluke in the yak. There are plenty of fun options down there.

I stayed at Brant Beach last week of September a couple of years ago, There is not much structure in the ocean but I caught snappers and croakers around high tide. There are boats at Barnegat Light, drive slow, speed traps, or go over the Causeway bridge and make a right and head south to Beach Haven you can find headboats and charters there. You can fish the inlet near the lighthouse on foot, wear corkers if you have them. You might be able to launch your kayaks there in the Bay. Ask at the bait shops, Buy some stuff, mullet rigs if the mullet run has started.

If you have the heavy spinning gear, try sharks off the beach at night. Make sure your gear is right because there are some big ones around.

There are fishing opportunities at Barnegate Inlet. It just depends on how much time you have to put in. Don't look for anything like a bluefish or striper blitz however. It's an inlet with current so if you've fished at SRI, you know what I mean. The crabbing in and around Beach Haven West is very good, especially at this time of the year. While you're at it, you can find some great snapper fishing as well. If you feel like an adventure, take the yaks out into the bay and step off into the water and "dance" for clams. Shuffle your toes in the mud and feel for the clam necks. The water is pretty shallow even away from the shoreline. Always test the depth with your paddle. The bulkheads at the end of some of the streets with access to the bay might be worth a try. Closer to the inlet ( You'll have to cross the bridge to LBI.) you might find croakers, snappers, fluke. The fluke season closes soon, so watch the dates. When all else fails, fish one of the head boats (There aren't too many.) from Barnegate Light on LBI.

We happen to have a sponsor on the site, Back Bay charters who does 2 and 3 person charters down there for Fluke and Weakfish that has been doing well lately. Check out their report here http://www.njfishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83403

I met a friend at Viking Village to leave for an offshore trip.

While they were waiting for me they fished off the dock and caught a real mixed bag on a screaming outgoing tide. Small stripers, herring, snappers, etc.

I think he had more fun on the dock than we did offshore.
