I've fished that river a lot from kayak the past few years, and i've only caught a few keepers that were just barely keepers. Pretty much all of my fish I catch there are between 14 and 17 inches. And based on what i see when looking around at others fishing, they're doing the same thing. Only one time i've seen somebody limit out on the shark river. I find that i catch more fish, but smaller ones in the river part, and bigger (but less) fish in the bay part by the tennis courts. I'll probably be out there tomorrow morning. If you want bigger fish, then i'd fish the ocean. That's where i'd fish if i wasn't restricted to the kayak. Raritan Bay is also a good option, i got a 6 pounder there last year by keyport.

Wednesday they couldn't be found, Thursday we had a nice catch of keepers closer to the 71 bridge in the river, yesterday no keepers in the river, spoke to a rowboat off the tennis courts and they had 9. Each day is different, and some days it's bait and some days it gulp, it pays to experiment. Loads of fish in the river and bay, you just have to pick thru them.

Spearing work pretty well in the river. If you find a area where there is hardly any current try drifting a single spearing with a split shot above it.

I actually fished the river from my kayak this morning from 7-9:30 and got two keepers in the back channel by the tennis courts. I heard they are catching a ton in the river part, but i only had around 2 hours to fish, and it takes me awhile to paddle out there, so i stayed in the back. One of the fish was around 5.5 pounds, the other was around 2.5 pounds. Both caught on my bucktail rig. Seems like there's a pretty decent amount of keepers in the river this year, because i saw a decent amount of ppl with keepers this morning. Once again, i heard they're catching more in the river by the bridges, so i'd probably try there.
