Fished the Lackawanna this past weekend
Thanks to A&G outfitters in Dickson City, PA for all their helpful hints and suggestions....
7 of us made the trek for a full weekend of fly and spin fishing at a truly beautiful waterway....
If any of you know the history of this river, you know it was once a cesspool of human filth and sulphuric acid run-off from all the mines in the Lackawana.....but 40 years ago the folks in that region decided enough was enough: the mines closed...waste treatment plants stopped dumping there, and a few determined soles decided to throw in some German brown trout....flash forward to today and it now is listed as one of the top 100 trout rivers in the USA.
We fished the trophy stretch for 2 days about as hard as anyone could.....the water was high, slightly discolored, and very fast...no hatches whatsoever....not a lot of action but the fish we hooked were all brutes by any standard...and here is the kicker: we were the total sum action on the river. IMAGINE: fishing a trophy-class river that is downright gorgeous by anyones image of a gorgeous river....parts of it are just hard to describe...and NO FISHING PRESSURE!!!!!!!!! No crowds on pools.....no competition!!!!!!!
The river is about 2-3 weeks off from getting uber-productive, but it fishes all year round and summer months the temps never go above 69 because its constantly cooled by underwater flows....
Ive got plenty of details.....email or PM me if youd like more info....
2 hours away to trout heaven!!!!!!!!
