Talking Gwl, Crappie Day 11/6

Left work early to head out for a day of fishing on Greenwood Lake. I had high expectations to catch my first ever Walleye out of Greenwood today. It wasn't meant to be. Today was my first time launching on the lake in search of Walleye. My only experience on this beautiful piece of water is Bass, Musky and ice fishing. I got some good tips from some great members on this site but just couldn't make it happen. Fished 20-30 feet all over the place, drop offs, humps etc. Used every damn jig I had in my box and all i could come up with were beautiful SLAB CRAPPIE!!! Im fine with catching Crappie all day, it just wasn't what I was looking for. I would say that I hooked a Crappie on every third drop this afternoon, It was nuts. The best part is that they were all over 12 inches with quite a few hitting the 14 inch mark. Good catching but still not the target I had in mind. I'll give it a go again sometime very, very soon. It was nice to be out there all alone today. MENTAL HEALTH DAY!!!

Thanx to the guys that gave me some direction on where to find my favorite marble eyed friends. I'll be back out there giving it hell before you know it. Anyone who has any helpful tips for catching GWL Walleye please feel free to PM me some info. I've caught Eyes in every body of water in NJ except for this one. I could use some more guidance!

Maybe the Walleye light switch was off today, who knows??? Seemed like perfect conditions to me, cloudy, south wind and a perfect Walleye chop on the lake. TIGHT LINEZ!!!

Just a thought... If you were getting that many crappies, it might mean your jigs were on the small side for Walleyes... I catch them on small jigs at times, but Walleyes will hit a much bigger lure than a Crappie will, and I like bigger jigs for Walleyes... think bass sized jigs, tubes/plastics... I do well on plastic tails in natural colors.. brownish/motor oil type colors, Off silver/white kind of like a shiner etc.
They REALLY like Sluggo/Finess Fish type of lures as well.

Over the years, I have caught a LOT of Walleyes on bass sized plain old Mr Twisters in Chartreuse.. They are bright and ugly, and look like you got them in the tackle box of a 6 year old, but
I have caught a ton of walleyes on them, in all water conditions..
Last but not least, get some GULP shiner types and try them... They work well..
Big live shiners on a bottom rig work too

One more thought- Try whole nightcrawlers on a bottom rig.. Walleyes will grab them, but crappies are generally not worm lovers.. Its worth a shot... bob
