Re: Name of site that ranks NJ waters?
Short answer: that chart is useless
Unlike the Pa Fish & Boat Comm - which does semi-regular surveys(trap netting & electroshocking) of lakes to see how they are doing(mostly special regs lakes and lakes recieving stockings) - NJ does not or so it seems. NJDFGW is very secretive about its goings on so its hard to tell if they do similar studies. I do know they survey streams but very few lakes. One would think that if your throwing 5000 muskies or walleyes into a certain lake you'd like to know how they r doing besides anglers reports(anglers do lie sometimes - really they do). I do know they publish their broodstock collection results of musky, pike and walleye which gives you some idea of what a few lakes hold but its precious little data to work with. They collect from Spruce Run, Swartswood, Budd and I think Greenwood lakes. As far as other species, I've never seen any sort of report like Pa does where they list species found, #'s and sizes. It would be extremely helpful for anglers yet they never publish anything. I think it would be kind of cool to see what 3-4 hrs of netting major lakes(and large rivers) would turn up in terms of baitfish, panfish and gamefish. It would certainly help biologists determine the heath of bodies of water and at the same time give anglers an accurate picture of what these places hold. My guess is most anglers wold be depressed by how many large fish there are that they don't ever see or catch .
