i used to go to effingers in raritan for fatheads during trout season but they are having trouble keeping them alive so they stopped ordering them... any other places nearby that anyone knows about that sells them consistently??

Many of the spots that I used to dip a small seine into for fatheads are now posted or gone. Many of the places you can buy fatheads have already been mentioned but, if your local pet shop stocks feeder minnows, you can pick them up there. My son was raising a few piranhas when he was younger and he would feed them a few fatheads from the store. I bought some at the Pet Shanty on Route 22 in Scotch Plains in the past. They pack them in a plastic bag filled with water and oxygen which makes them last for almost 24 hours. I've never seen them in the bigger chain pet stores. Make a few phone calls and see if they have any. Check the Straco Auto Parts store in Hackettstown. They have them and shiners too.
