Default I’m from New England, what’s the bite like?

I grew up going to Mistic Island in the summers, it was just outside of Atlantic City. In the 80s the only fish we ever caught were land sharks and a few flounder, that was it. What is the bite like now?

New England fisheries are outstanding compared to 20 years ago.

This was my last trip in the gulf of Maine.

And a few years ago the pollock were nuts

We certainly don’t have the ground fishery you have up north but having said that it’s been a pretty typical year. Bluefish have not been around like they were when you were here but the Striper fishing has rebounded amazingly from where it was in the 80s. Tuna fishing both in and offshore has been the best in my recent memory, Winter Flounder fishing is almost non existent and Fluke/Summer Flounder is up and down.

As far as bottom fishing is concerned, the sea bass fishery is strong. You have to weed thru lots of juvenile shorts to find keepers, but that is a good thing. Blackfish have also been strong. Unlike NY, the number of keepers allowed is one right now. So lots of catch and release until the keeper limit increases next month. Porgys are a different story this year. We have had 3 epic years in a row in terms of quality and quantity. Things have cooled off this year, with occasional spurts of action, and occasional dry periods.Ling also cooled off this year. Hopefully the stock is rebounding as the pressure has been relaxed.

Bluefish are disappearing inNJ? They haven’t been around here for about 15 years, I thought you guys still had gators. Glad the striper bite is strong. You guys had the world record for the longest time.

Thanks for the post and watching the video.

Sea bass...my brother lives in RI, I caught my first one 3 years ago. By far the best eating fish I’ve ever had. Porgys used to be everywhere, but the commercial guys have killed them up here.

Ling? Is that ling cod?

Thanks for watching the video.
