![]() Here is my report for the last few day since opening day this past Saturday.
Went out to the Andover musky river area with some buddies. 8am came and first cast into the cold water. My bro in-law was using his usual crawlers, Jon was using power dough another friend a vibrax spinner, and I was using a black and red Joes Fly spinner. Trout wanted nothing to do with worms or dough. Out of 10+ trout landed, only one wasn’t caught on spinners. Headed to the Rockaway River and landed 3 more. Same Joes fly and my buddy on a trout magnet. Neon body, orange tail. The highlight was definitely the nice hold-over I landed. On my food scale it was just shy of 2lbs (16.5 inches long). Baked in foil with olive oil, lemon pepper and stuffed with bacon. YUM YUM… Sunday, went bass fishing. Strictly using gulp minnows (2’ and 3’) with smaller jig heads. For the 2’, they seemed more interested in the blue top, white belly over chartreuse top and white belly. For the 3’, they were crushing the smelt color. Over 20 bass in about 2 hours, with the biggest being about 3lbs. Look inside the mouth, you can see the tail of another unfortunate smaller bass in its gullet. Monday’s action was a little slower. Landed a few bass here and there, some crappie a fat perch and a bait sized sunny. That nice slab pic being the biggest. 3’ gulp minnow in smelt again. White grub wasn’t doing so hot. Tuesday hit a tiny local pond adjacent to a popular spot on the rockaway river. Walked all around, using the same gulp minnow. Landed a nice pickerel (2-3lbs) and unfortunately didn’t have a fish gripper. I feel bad the fish was unhooked on the ground. He was fine and swam away to annoy another fisherman another day… Ha (I personally love catching the slime darts, lb per lb, you aint gonna get a better freshwater fight than a good solid slime dart). Caught a few more dinky bass and tiny darts and lost the only jig I had a snag. I saw the rockaway river and still have a trout magnet in my best. Said why not…lets catch some dinner. 15 mins later, dinner was caught and I went home a happy fisherman. For those that say NJ has the worst fisheries in the country, I beg to differ. 4 days out, caught 6 different species ranging from tiny to 3lbs or so. Had some great outdoor fun and put some food on my table as well. Can’t ask for more (and it’s only April). |
