![]() I have a 2009 9.9 Four stroke. The engine has never been run and has never had oil in it, Mercury calls for 10/30 Mercury or Quicksilver oil. My question is can anyone recommend any other oil that is more readily accessible, say Mobile 1, Pennzoil or another brand. Also has anyone used a fully synthetic oil.

![]() I would recommend using the mercury oil.
Thats what the engine was designed to use. and doing so will have it operating the way it should for many many years. Using the wrong oil could really shorten the engines life span.

![]() Agreed. If it says Mercury oil use that. A warranty would be voided not using it.
I have a 2006 25hp Mercury EFI and I use Mobil One in the grade they specify. It's only a Quart and half. More importantly is the right filter. That's what makes the difference. Mercury makes a smaller and larger filter. The larger one has more filtration area. Its longer.

![]() go on mercs website and look for the certification that makes them spec that oil. Then just find a different brand in the same weight that has that spec. The merc oil can be had anywhere including walmart and just about every marina. It does have an additive for water that will emulsify it and not let it break down the oil, something else too. I have a few quarts of it on my shelf in garage, tell us where your located and I can point u to the nearest place that has it. Or stop by walmart and grab 2 quarts in the boating aisle, yours takes about a quart and a third....btw not all 9.9 mercs have oil filters, depends which model you have. I recommend running the motor 10-15 hours and then changing the oil to get rid of any metal particles from break-in, then each season or 100 hours whichever comes first

![]() I have a 4 stroke Mercury 25hp. It uses 1.4 quarts in the crankcase. What's 9.9hp use? A quart?
We are talking less than $10 of oil a year. Are we over analyzing this stuff a bit?
