![]() Do you think it is too early to start fishing from a boat for stripers in Raritan Bay? I do, Although some bass will be caught from shore in skinny water it is not good from a boat.April is the beginning and May is even better. Remember there is no current tight to shore in the west end of the bay.I would not hesitate to try it from shore but from aboat can be very difficult. When they start to bite in 8-10' of water you can start a slick and hold them behind the boat.Clam works better in the very early season. I will use clam but have been a bunker chunker all my life. As soon as the first bass takes a chunk i am done with the clams. Do not get me wrong-CLAMS WORK! Netting your own bunker and chunking has been a main stay for decades. It is very rewarding and once you have perfected this method it is truly addictive. When the big girls arrive it is like turning on a light switch.I will bet dollars to donuts Mat will be the first to get into them Any bets? Nice to be young but the experience and the log book help. Remember NY starts April 15 so know where the line is, Time to give Percy the net maker a call and replace that old net For those of you that have never netted your own bunker, he gives lessons and in my opinion builds the best nets in the country!.Little patience it will start soon.

![]() Had a couple runoffs last night chunking believe it or not. Hooked double backed on my friends chunk. While it wasn't a lot of action it was something. Went to Mr. Percy's house today a grabbed me a net. Awesome guy and doesn't mind taking his time to show you exactly how to throw the net.

![]() Hate to call it a "waste of time" because I'm sure fish can be caught this early with the warm winter and fishing is never a waste... but my season officially starts April 15 once things heat up. These fish are local resident fish and until the bite gets hot, I wait it out. Might be the wrong outlook but I fish when I "know" the fish are there not "hope"....

![]() In the good old days St Paddy's day was the start of flounder fishing for me.
Striper fishing is still a good month away.

Hahaha hahaha I love anyone who thinks like this, more fish for the rest of us. Historically (of the beach) March can be the best numbers month you can get. If I told you about bites I have been on in march you wouldn't believe it. I lost count of how many nights myself and the guys I fished with lost count of the amount of bass we caught and I'm not talking about 10 or 20 fish each. More like 60,70,80 per guy. With No one except a few true die hards around. Sometimes they are on the small side but multiple nights where the vast majority were 10,12,15lbs my best in march might be pushing the high teens. Don't think I personally broke 20lbs yet in march but it's close. I missed the best years but right before I started 20 to 25lbers were common place most nights. |
