But...

So we can’t count our chickens quite yet. There is a nice number of young stripers out there growing toward spawning size, but we’re going to need at least one more year class like it, if not larger, to really solidify the foundation of the stock and help keep robust the numbers of fish roaming our waters. We’re still ahead of where we were in the 1980s, since the total existing stock has not sunk to the depths of the collapse early that decade.

Thanks Gerry for some good news. If I read one more complaining post it would be one more too many. Now let's talk about puppies and warm spring days

the best is when some guy from upstate goes out once and doesn't catch, then posts a thread declaring the target fish he didn't catch must be an endangered species lol

Actually, I have "caught" last 3 times I went out, if you want to call one or two fish "catching"...Problem is, a LOT of guys actually did not "catch" on each of those trips, and a LOT of guys never even had a solid hit... Its Feb, for decades we were catching whiting, ling and cod this time of year... Where are they?... It will be flounder "season" in a few weeks,.. you all ready to go out there and get your 2?...
That thread you refer to was supposed to get guys discussing the fact that there are some success stories, and I alluded to Stripers and porgies as "comeback species... Guys like you feel the need to ridicule, fine, have at it.. The fact remains however, there are dozens of head boats out there that haven't sailed since Dec, and won't sail until April. Not because of lack of customers.. Its a lack of fish.. We can discuss it and hope for a resurgence in stocks, or we can pretend everything is as it should be, and ridicule those that feel there is a substantial problem..... bob

Unlike a lot of other fish, I would think Stripers stocks are much easier to assess since they spawn in specif areas that are fairly easy to access and monitor...

Not like other fisheries where they do a few trawls in areas the fish may or may not be, interview a few people that may or may not know what they are doing and assess the stock based on that.
