Default Canyon Tuna - Big Eyes, Yellowfin, Mahi & More

Canyon Report 9/16
The Tuesday/Wednesday canyon trip was a good one.
We started the trip fishing for Mahi and it was another day of "Mahi-Maddness".
We caught over 250 mahi up to 20lbs.
After that we set up on a drift for tuna.
Trevor Benevento from NY landed the first tuna which was a longfin.
Shortly after that 100lb to 200lb big eyes schooled up under the boat and it was a "Big eye bonanza!"
We read tuna under the boat from 100' to 250' down.
Jigging was the best method for catching the big eyes and yellowfin.
We had hot action until about 330 am with as many as 4 of the big beasts hooked up at a time.
Trevor Benevento added a big eye and a limit of mahi to his catch.
Anthony Lalli had his limit of mahi and 2 bigeyes.
Geno Mautschke from Brooklyn NY had his limit of mahi, one big eye, and one yellowfin.
Rob Finkle from Sparta NJ had a chipped ceramic guide that cost him several big eyes but he discovered it in time to bail out with his limit of yellowfin and a limit of mahi.
Pedro DeCosta from Yonkers NY caught two big eyes and a limit of mahi.
Erik Bogan had off from school and made the trip.
He jigged for 3 straight hours before connecting with a small yellowfin.
A little after that he hooked into his first ever, big eye that hit the deck after a 30 minute battle at about 200lbs.
After 330 am we still read plenty of fish but the bites slowed down. We did add a few more fish after that including a swordfish and a couple of tilefish after sunrise.
We wound up with 14 Big eyes up to 200lbs,
8 yellowfin,
1 longfin,
1 swordfish,
2 tilefish,
280 mahi-mahi.
It looks good for upcoming trips.
More tuna are moving into the canyon every day.
The big Jamaica is scheduled to sail on 31hr trips at 7AM every Tuesday and Thursday.
21hr overnight trips sail 5PM every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Great job Capt. Put them all on fish.

Hopefully there was no one left empty handed at the rails?
